The Harissa flight line is the most iconic view in Lebanon: the shrine, the cable car and Jounieh Bay all from the air. Here is what to expect.
Harissa sits high above Jounieh, crowned by the white statue of Our Lady of Lebanon. From the ground it is Lebanon's most visited pilgrimage site. From the air, it becomes something else entirely — a landmark you glide past with the whole bay opening beneath your feet.
Why fly over Harissa?
The ridge between Ghosta, Harissa and Jounieh creates a natural amphitheatre facing the Mediterranean. Sea breeze meets mountain air, giving smooth, reliable flying conditions for most of the year. Few places in the world let you fly a coastal bay, a mountain shrine and a working marina in a single ten to fifteen minute flight.
- Our Lady of Lebanon shrine and the Harissa basilica from above.
- The Téléférique cable car line climbing from the coast.
- Jounieh Bay, the marina and the Casino du Liban.
- Beirut to the south and Byblos to the north on clear days.
Take-off, flight and landing
Flights launch from Ghosta, a short drive above Harissa at roughly 650 metres. After a safety briefing you are clipped into the tandem harness in front of your pilot, and take-off is a few relaxed steps down a gentle grass slope. Once airborne you settle into a seated position and the pilot works the ridge towards Harissa before descending over the bay to land in Jounieh.
Best time for a Harissa flight
Spring and autumn offer the most stable air and the clearest visibility. In summer, early morning and late afternoon flights avoid the mid-day heat — and a sunset flight over Harissa, with the statue lit against the sea, is the single most photogenic slot of the day.
Is it safe?
Every flight is run by a certified tandem pilot with inspected equipment and a reserve parachute on board. Conditions are checked before each session, and if the wind or visibility is not right, the flight is rescheduled. No experience is needed — you do not steer, and you do not need to be especially fit.
